Combined Structures were appointed to provide a comprehensive shell and core package for constructing a new single residential dwelling in Wimbledon. The project site posed unique challenges for both the basement construction and the overall build. Given the constraints of the site and the need to maintain high standards of craftsmanship and sustainability, innovative solutions were required to successfully meet the project’s ambitious goals.

The Challenge

The project involved constructing a high-performance luxury residence. The team needed to develop a strategy that addressed both the basement excavation and superstructure construction, ensuring that the design adhered to rigorous structural and environmental standards.

The Process

During the planning phase, the team worked closely with the structural engineer to revise the original basement design. Due to the complexities of the project, underpinning with sacrificial piles was implemented to support the front facade in its temporary state. Temporary works were designed to ensure the stability of the building while the excavation for the basement was carried out. Careful coordination of material deliveries, access routes, and site logistics ensured smooth progress. This thoughtful planning enabled the project to move forward with minimal disruption while meeting both structural and logistical needs.

The Solution

To ensure the stability of the front facade during construction, the team used underpinning with sacrificial piles. This solution provided the necessary support during the excavation process while temporary works were in place. Compact machinery was used to streamline material delivery and reduce the impact on the surrounding area. With meticulous management of both the excavation and superstructure phases, the team was able to construct the luxury dwelling to the highest standards of quality and energy efficiency.
